Good News

Very few things get you going like sports. Energy being released. It's the excitement of power being channeled, going from the potential to the real. It may be as explosive as five 300-pound football players charging off the line to meet head-on with their equals on the other team. It may be as subtle as utter concentration when a golfer lines up where the ball sits now to its destination across a rolling green 40 feet away.

We don't all play sports. In fact, we don't all even watch sports. But there's something in catching a sports highlight on the TV or hearing about a close game that stirs you inside.

I asked my friends at Opportunity Village about what they like best about sports, and here's what they say: "I really like basketball because it is a very fast action game and they can score points. The game is easy to understand how to get points. I have also played basketball."

"I like to watch football and baseball on TV. I like baseball because I like to see them hit the ball, and watch people slide into the home plate. I just like the game."

In his book Zennis, Peter Spang writes: "...playing good tennis...has nothing to do with fulfilling ideals...it has to do with your ability to respond intelligently to the challenge of the moment."

Sports is good for us. It makes us stronger physically if we play, and it makes us stronger mentally if we watch. Why? Because it's good news. So much of today's news is bad but sports is good.

It brings a smile to a world that needs to smile more.
