What's Real

Technology is exciting, isn't it?  Just today scientists showed us the newest "technology" that
will make our lives easier - a scooter that saves us walking - we just stand still on it & it goes in
whatever direction we lean.

But wait a minute...technology can make life easier but is it as exciting as the real thing -
nature?  I would say no - "nature" is always better.

I asked my mentally handicapped friends what they thought about nature:

"I am thankful for the birds, squirrels, outside...the squirrels are very resourceful of finding food
their cute, furry, big bushy tail, they chatter and their tail just goes.  Birds are pretty,
tiny...colorful."
"I like the changes of the seasons, but I like summer the best...I like the smell of fresh mowed
grass."

Here's a poem by Susan Smith, a resident of Opportunity Village, a center for the handicapped
in Clear Lake, Iowa:
"Rain, rain, and more rain;  People stew and complain.  Amid lightning with its loud claps, Rain
comes with a song, For sleepy days naps.  For some, it scares and even annoys - Except me -
I'd rather enjoy!  Oh, rain, rain, lovely rain."

So, the next time you see people rushing around in cars, yapping on a cellphone, or staring at
computers (like you are now), and then you see people fishing or jogging, or kids playing on a
playground, you might want to ask yourself -

Technology or nature...which is better?  ...which is real?

With more & more gadgets around us, don't forget what is real.
