Change is good

Driving down Main Street
A sunny day
Opportunity to get out
And see what's going on

"The economy's getting better"
The radio told me
I smiled as I passed by
a new big building going up

Then a few blocks down
Not as many people walking
A vacant store passed by
Yesterday it sold religious gifts

Not much beyond that
I decided to stop by
my favorite bookstore
"Going out of business sale"

My town is changing
Big stores are coming in
Little stores are going out
They say "change is good"

Recently I asked my friends at Opportunity Village what they think when they see a vacant building or a store closing. One person said, "I feel sad when I see empty store fronts or vacant buildings. Burger King just closed this Spring but I hear that Arby's are coming to town." Another remarked, "I think that whenever you see a store or stores closed down or getting closed down that the stores might be running out of business..."

Please stop by your favorite small business. It is what makes a town a town. The big businesses look alike. You can find them in any city. The small businesses are the personality of the town.

Change is good but bigger isn't always better. Protect your town. It's part of you.
